Periodontitis

Periodontitis in an inflammatory disease affecting the supporting structures of the teeth that anchore the tooth within the jaw. 

The causes of the periodontitis are like in tooth decay the microorganism (Porphyromonas gingivalis) contained in the dental plaque. These bacteria produce harmful substances causing inflammation of the gums (gingivitis).

The affected gum is swollen, reddish, sensitive and prone to bleeding (i. E. gum bleeding during cleaning or after meal). The inflammation can be in the surrounding of one or more teeth or in the complete set of teeth. Also smoking, stress, diabetes, higher age or genetic predisposition can contribute to the gum inflammation. The presence of the dental calculus that develops by mineralization of the dental plaque and irritates the gums ranks among other causal factors. Also, inaccurately manufactured overhanging fillings, crowns or abnormal dental position have harmful effect. According to medical records, eighty to ninety per cent of the Czech population suffer from gum inflammation of various degree.

If the gum inflammation remains untreated, it passes to periodontitis. Symptoms include gum pockets formation, the gum retreats from the teeth and often halitosis occurs. Loosening of the supporting structures results in loosening or loss of teeth.

Periodontitis jeopardizes not only the teeth but also other parts of human body. Bacteria causing inflammation within the oral cavity can access directly the circulation or via airways the lungs. The inflammatory substance that can get to the whole body are especially dangerous. The scientist discovered an association between periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases, increased risk of preterm births, diabetes and respiratory diseases.

Periodontitis is difficult to treat, however, the prophylaxis is simple - proper oral hygiene and increasing of general immune defence of the organism.
